Diving in the Amed area

Amed grew as a tourist area because of diving. The small independent hotels are often attached to a dive shop, or have one close by.

NE Bali: A quiet and dry part of the island

Looking at a map of Bali the coastal road that runs around the island one might assume its possible to drive from Candi Dasa up to Singaraja to Lovina in about 2 hours.

East Bali: Why should you go?

rice051205v2_opt.jpgEast Bali is my favourite part of the island for a number of reasons. Life out there is way slower than in the Kuta, Legian, Seminyak area, the scenery is lovely and the bule population is very low. All this makes for a pleasant environment to relax. Hell when I retire I might even move out there with my wives and girlfriends.

Amed: What is it and where is it?

Listen to travelers talk about Amed and you would think it was the only place worth visiting in East Bali. The truth about Amed is that it is a small village on the SE coast not far from the village of Culik. The stretch off coastline that follows around south of Amed as far as Aas is lumped together under the name Amed. I imagine one day this stretch could be called The Resort of Amed.

Amed & Culik: East Bali

Beaches on the East coast of Bali, are predominately black sand. Nothing wrong with that, but people always seem to prefer a white sand beach. The beaches in the Amed area vary between the 2, and can be mixed. The little boats the locals use, are called jukung, and at night you can see them on the horizon, a line of lights. There are no banks, or ATMs out there, so if you are staying for a while, be sure to change money, or withdraw money before you leave, Kuta, or at the latest, Candi Dasa.

Amed: What’s out there?

People have been asking me a lot recently about Amed, where its is, and what’s out there. Amed is a tiny fishing village on the coast of East Bali. To get to Amed from Kuta, you jump on the Bypass heading to Sanur, exiting Sanur the Bypass splits in 2, you take the one going right, which will turn into the coastal highway heading east. You can make Candi Dasa in 2 hour from Kuta and after going through Tirtaganga, reach Amed proper in about 3.5-4 hours depending on how fast you go, how many times you stop etc. Distances are deceptive out here, so allow yourself 4 hours and you’ll be good.

Candi Dasa: A handy place to stop in East Bali

Candi Dasa: A handy place to stop in East Bali because it is right on the main road and provides your last real chance of changing money, getting online and having a selection of affordable places to stay and eat.

Swimming pool at Seraya Shores in East Bali.

seraya_pool_bali_051105.jpgSeraya Shores is located out in East Bali on the coast close to Ujung. I like going there because of the scenery and tranquility. It has been several months and there have been some improvements. The south coast of Bali is great for surfing but not the best for swimming, waves and currents. Seraya Shores has built a lovely pool that is just several meters from the ocean. On a sunny afternoon there is nothing better than taking a relaxing swim in the pool, then sitting under one of the bales and enjoying the crashing waves. Well there is, but I cannot write about that in the blog.

Seraya Shores - A special place in East Bali

palm_trees062304.jpgBali has some hidden places that are special and one of our favourite places is Seraya Shores, a small hotel out in East Bali, on the coast close to Ujung.

For me staying at Seraya is one of the best ways to capture a feeling of being in Bali. The swaying palms, crashing surf and very relaxed atmosphere make me want to recommend this place to everyone.
