Looking for a cheap hotel in Bali

suka beach innBali has 20,000 hotel rooms supposedly. Today is December 20th, which is high-season. That means prices are increased and rooms are harder to get. My friends from Oregon wanted to change hotels this morning. The Puri Cendana in Seminyak was nice, but they didn’t want to pay the 300,000rp price tag. Their combined requirements were, a cheaper place, close to the beach, AC, pool, double beds. At 7.30am I took the car back to the shop on Jl. Padma Utara, and walked home. Arriving at the Puri Cendana an hour later, Ollie and I jumped on my motorbike for a tour of the accommodation in Legian and Kuta. I had some places in mind, but he wanted to see the rooms.

All Seasons Resort: Legian Bali

Bali tourism is in transition. Older businesses are going down the crapper, new ones are opening up. There are all kinds of reasons / excuses, but one of the most powerful is ‘the customers want different stuff now’. Twenty year ago people came to Bali for bamboo bars, Wayan singing Bob Marley and guest houses. Now they want slicker places, AC and lounge bars. Riding through Jl. Padma Utara in Legian, I noticed a new place called the All Seasons Hotel

Visiting Hotel Baleka in Legian Bali

ngurah060905.jpgThursday afternoon I rode down to Hotel Baleka on Jl. Padma Utara (Padma north) in Legian. I checked out this Balinese owned hotel, which has been in operation since 1975. My guide was Mr. Ngurah D. Putra, the General Manager. Ngurah is a software engineer turned hotel manager, since his family owns the Baleka. One of his ideas he has put into practice is to create a database of guest profiles, so that the staff can best serve repeat customers. That is hands on management. The name of the hotel means Bali Legian Kaja, the area where it is located and the hotel caters largely to Australian families wanting an affordable downtown option.

Accommodation in Legian Bali

Legian was the up and coming tourist area in the late 80’s, early 90’s. As far as expats were concerned Goa Cafe, located on Jl. Legian and Double Six, was the center of the universe and in the days before internet and cell phones, was the place you’d find people. In the years since Legian has become a mass of budget- mid range accommodation and family restaurants, relying heavily on the Australian market. Blue Ocean Beach is about as cosmopolitan as Legian gets, the 200 meter strip of bars and bechside restaurants drawing tourists from all over including a selection of long time expats.

Jl. Double Six in Legian Bali

street062005.jpgOne of the busiest streets in Legian / Seminyak is Jl. Double Six. It run perpendicular to the beach and connects Jl. Legian to Jl. Arjuna. The narrow winding street is lined with shops selling a never-ending selection of sarongs, flashy / holiday style clothes, accessories, hats and handicrafts. During the daytime the street is very busy with traffic, all pushing its way through and causing blockages. The traffic problem has been helped greatly by the new regulation that forces traffic to exit this dead-end street via Jl. Padma Utara. Motorbikes can still drive both ways. Double Six, which actually Jl. Arjuna, was unofficially re-named after the large nightclub that occupies a beach side spot at the end of the road.
