A few people have been asking on the Baliblog Forum about good and reasonably priced accommodation in Bali. Of course there are over a thousand places to choose from but at the moment with the high increase of tourists to Bali it appears this form of accommodation is at a premium. I have always stayed at the Prawita Cottages on Jalan Legian in Kuta mainly because it is a Balinese family-owned and run premises but also a friendly one. It was quite strange how Candika and I stumbled upon this place. It was in 2003 when we returned to Bali after having ten glorious and interesting years in Yogyakarta, Central Java. We stayed at a place in Seminyak at first that was owned by a friend of mine from Yogyakarta, and although it was a nice place, it was a tad expensive and far from the centre of activity. To be honest, Seminyak just wasn’t my scene. So one very hot day we started walking from Jalan Dhayana Pura and headed south checking out the various losmens and hotels along the way. By late afternoon, I was perspiring like a stuck pig at a luau and damn tired. I was just about to give up when Candika said one more and we entered the Prawita Cottages.
Bali has so much to offer a visitor. Like a chick who can count, owns a Jag, juggles 6 balls and can tie a knot in a cheery stalk with her tongue, Bali is a multi-talented babe.
This afternoon I went to Jl. Pantai Kuta to talk to the staff at Harris Resort. The resort is relatively new and is situated at Kuta Halfway. The first thing I noticed when driving in, apart from the newness of the place was the abundance of orange and green, the official colors. Staff here seemed relaxed and friendly. Harris Resort includes surfing lessons in its packages!
Back in 2003 I visited the Aneka Beach Hotel on Jl. Pantai Kuta and interviewed Made Purnami. Made is the Sales Manager and showed me around the property. The Aneka Beach Hotel I remember had very nice gardens and a few bungalows with natural bamboo and alang alang roofs.

Bali has 20,000 hotel rooms supposedly. Today is December 20th, which is high-season. That means prices are increased and rooms are harder to get. My friends from Oregon wanted to change hotels this morning. The Puri Cendana in Seminyak was nice, but they didn’t want to pay the 300,000rp price tag. Their combined requirements were, a cheaper place, close to the beach, AC, pool, double beds. At 7.30am I took the car back to the shop on Jl. Padma Utara, and walked home. Arriving at the Puri Cendana an hour later, Ollie and I jumped on my motorbike for a tour of the accommodation in Legian and Kuta. I had some places in mind, but he wanted to see the rooms.
Puri Etnik is a budget hotel in Legian. Situated between Jl. Melasti and Jl. Benesari, Puri Etnik is just 70 meters from the beach. Rooms are $99 per person for a 10day package including breakfast.
The Kuta Beach has been around for 30 years. Located on Jl. Singosari, the one-way street that ends at Matahari Square, Kuta Beach Club looks like an older Balinese style hotel.
