Bali Kuta Guesthouses
Where to stay in Kuta Bali
The village of Kuta has changed dramatically since the first modern age travelers drifted in in the early 1970’s. Back then the small lanes running between the main street and the beach were just sandy tracks, complete with palm trees, cattle and crater-sized potholes.
Getting to Legian meant going to a completely different village. Nowadays the Kuta-Legian-Seminyak strip is one contiguous sprawl. The actual village of Kuta (now a very rich village) is bordered by Jl. Bakung Sari at the southern end, Jl. Melasti at the northern end, Jl. Pantai Kuta to the west and Jl. Tanjung Mekar to the …

Poppies I: Small businesses growing in Kuta Bali
Sitting here at Bamboo Corner on Poppies Lane I in Kuta, eating a nasi goreng super for 6,500rp, I noticed the new businesses that have sprouted up across the street. I see people working, painting, sawing, and polishing. I see new roller-doors, shop windows. Right next door is a construction site that is boarded up with bamboo matting.

Accommodation on Poppies Lane I Kuta Bali
Poppies Lane I is one of the main accommodation streets in Kuta. Along with Poppies Lane II just to the north, this area is lined with budget hotels and guesthouses. Most of them are simple and cheap places that can’t be booked in advance online. This usually isn’t a problem since most of these cheaper places operate mostly on a walk-up business. During peak times and especially if you arrive late in the day during a peak holiday time you might be scrambling to find a place you like. Not surprisingly, the better places tend to fill up first, so …

Accommodation in Kuta
For most travelers, Kuta Beach will be their first destination after the short taxi ride from the airport 15 minutes away.
Kuta is tourist central complete with luxurious resorts, narrow streets and alleys and abundant budget accommodation. Poppies Gang (lane) 1 & 2 are wall-to-wall guesthouses. I can tell you from personal experience it is a good idea to write down the name and address of the guesthouse when you arrive. I’m sure I wasn’t the first traveler to go for a drink and not be able to remember if it was The Island, The Beach, The Waterfront, The Sunset, or The Sunrise guesthouse I was staying at.

Looking for a cheap hotel in Bali
Bali has 20,000 hotel rooms supposedly. Today is December 20th, which is high-season. That means prices are increased and rooms are harder to get. My friends from Oregon wanted to change hotels this morning. The Puri Cendana in Seminyak was nice, but they didn’t want to pay the 300,000rp price tag. Their combined requirements were, a cheaper place, close to the beach, AC, pool, double beds. At 7.30am I took the car back to the shop on Jl. Padma Utara, and walked home. Arriving at the Puri Cendana an hour later, Ollie and I jumped on my motorbike for a tour of the accommodation in Legian and Kuta. I had some places in mind, but he wanted to see the rooms.

Jalan Legian Hotel Guide
Jalan Legian is the main street that runs north- south all the way from Kuta to Seminyak ( although its called Jalan Seminyak when you get in that neighborhood ). All the hotels listed in this guide are fairly close to each other and are approximately 5-10 minutes walk from the beach, same distance to the shopping street at Kuta Square. Lower Jalan Legian has plenty of bars and restaurants and well as souvenir shops. The Bounty ship and Paddy’s are 2 well known bars that attract newcomers.

Accommodation on Poppies Lane II Kuta Bali
Poppies Lane II in Kuta is jammed with guesthouses and hotels, and most of them are simple places that can’t be booked online in advance. During most times of the year you can arrive bags in hand and find a room that suits your budget. You may not get a room at the top place on your list, but you should be able to get a similar room for a similar price not far away.
During peak travel season and especially if you arrive late in the day you might have more trouble. It’s worth considering booking your first night …
