Bali Budget Hotels

Looking for a cheap hotel in Bali

suka beach innBali has 20,000 hotel rooms supposedly. Today is December 20th, which is high-season. That means prices are increased and rooms are harder to get. My friends from Oregon wanted to change hotels this morning. The Puri Cendana in Seminyak was nice, but they didn’t want to pay the 300,000rp price tag. Their combined requirements were, a cheaper place, close to the beach, AC, pool, double beds. At 7.30am I took the car back to the shop on Jl. Padma Utara, and walked home. Arriving at the Puri Cendana an hour later, Ollie and I jumped on my motorbike for a tour of the accommodation in Legian and Kuta. I had some places in mind, but he wanted to see the rooms.

Puri Cendana Hotel Seminyak Bali

My friend Toby from Oregon is visiting soon, with his young daughter. Man is he in for a shock! Extremely hot and humid right now, and just eating today, I was sweating profusely. Lucky are the local people who work in an AC environment.

Gili Trawangan accommodation

Looking at a map of Gili Trawangan, you will see that most of the accommodation is located on the south eastern side of the island. This is also the location of most everything else, such as bars and restaurants. For people with money, the best place to stay is probably Vila Almarik on the NE side. A good budget option is Pondok Lita, just inland from the Beer Shack on the SE coast. Being close to the ‘action’ in Gili Trawangan, isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as its not an ‘all night rocking party’.

Accommodation in Candi Dasa Bali

On my recent visit to Candi Dasa, a local told asked where I was staying. I told him ‘Flamboyant’, the name of the guest house in Senkidu. The cost was 50,000rp per night. He told me that in Candi Dasa you can find places for 50,000rp, 150,000rp, 250,000, 350,000rp and so on, whatever your budget can afford. Here is a list of some of places in different price categories, in the Candi Dasa / Senkidu area.

Surfing: The peak season in Bali

July is the peak season for surfing in Bali. The SW coast, all the way from Medewi to Uluwatu enjoys offshore winds and decent swell. Kuta beach will be busy too, with begining surfers and local Bali boys jostling for position on larger than normal waves.

Flashbacks: A unique hotel in Sanur Bali

flashbacksSanur is an alternative beach resort to Kuta and Nusa Dua. It tends to attract Europeans, families and expats. The main street, Jl. Danau Tamblingan is long and seems like an unending strip of bars, hotels, shops and restaurants. Today my friend Mike took me to a cute little hotel along Jl. Danau Tamblingan, called Flashbacks. We met the Australian owners, Peter and Jan, who showed us around and chatted avbout the tourist scene. Flashbacks was designed and built by Peter, in the style of a Manado house. it has lovely hardwood floors, walls and bamboo / alang-alang roofs. When we entered the first thing we saw was the coffee house. Its cosy and the kind of place you’d want to stop, for a shady coffee and a sandwich.

Gili Meno accommodation

Gili Meno has a range of accommodation to fit any budget. The small island is only 2km by 1km, and like Gili Trawangan, the cheaper places are on the northern side of the island.

Gili Air accommodation

A German lady friend of mine visited Gili Air a couple of years ago and loved it. She didn’t love the stray cats (in the Gili’s there are no dogs, but many cats), or the local young men, who are like a pack of pole cats, but the island itself is quieter than Gili Trawangan, and closer to the mainland.

Affordable accommodation in Ubud Bali

Bali has 20,000 hotel and guest house rooms, which vary from the very basic ‘losman’ (simple fan room with cold water), to villas to the ‘Best Hotel in the World’ (Four Seasons Sayan). In each area you have incredible choice and no one has visited every property. a while ago I visited guest houses and budget hotels in 3 parts of Ubud, Jl. Hanoman, Jl. Kajeng and Jl. Penestenan. LP’s new SE Asia guide lists their choices for accomodation in the Ubud area.
