Reliability of Internet cafes in Bali-part III

No matter what they tell you at an internet cafe about the speed of their connection, you will almost always be sharing that connection with the other customers. So if the sign says '512 connection' and there are 15 monitors, you are getting a piece of that. If someone is in there downloading music, the speed for the whole place will crawl. It's a good idea to get to an internet cafe mid morning of mid afternoon, when everyone is at the beach.

Reliability of Internet cafes in Bali-part I

Bali has hundreds of internet cafes and the standard varies greatly. On one end of the scale you get leather captain's chairs, AC, coffee menu, broadband and flat screen monitors. On the other end of the scale you get sweat boxes, dial up access, tiny monitors / desks/ chairs, and lousy software. I still haven't found the perfect internet cafe, but here is what I like.

Internet access in Ubud

Last year I did a small guide to internet cafes in Ubud. This time around I have used 3 different ones including Highway on Jl. Raya Ubud and the one next to it. Most of the places tend to have older equipment, some have USB ports, some don't. Suria, the place next to Highway is usually full in the evenings, as the rate is only 9,000rp per hour.

Global Xtreme Kerobokan: Good priced internet

One of the first places I visited when I came to Bali in 2003, was Global Xtreme in Kerobokan. The ISP / internet cafe offers a decent connection, and serves food and drinks. Downstairs you can make telephone calls. For someone just arrived in Bali, Global can be a good base to start from. The bulletin board at the top of the stairs has accommodation, transportation and other stuff posted.

Reliability of Internet cafes in Bali-part II

In my experience if all you want to do is surf the web and check your email, you can get away with dial up. Anything more involved you'll need a better connection. In the Kuta area you can get 250rp per minute, in Sanur its going to be 400rp per minute. Global in Kerobokan offers something like 150 per minute.

Plenty of new internet cafes opening up in Bali

Right now I am sitting in a new internet cafe located on Gang Ronta, between Poppies I & II. The place is somewhat non descript and is located across from Warung Pama. The price per minute is 250rp.

Internet access in Seminyak Bali

Internet access in Bali is one of the tricky things I have to deal with. For my first 2 years here I used internet cafés and 2 of my favourites are Internet Outpost on Poppies Lane II in Kuta and Global Xtreme on Jl. Raya Kerobokan in Kerobokan.
