Internet access in Bali has improved over the last few years. Apart from using internet cafes, there are now wi-fi hotspots, some offering free access. Dial-up is no longer the only affordable way to get online at home. There are a number companies offering a range of solutions, depending on your location, requirements and budget.

Free wi-fi in Seminyak Bali

joulla'sFree wi-fi sounds like a dream come true, and it is certainly a benefit to a lot of people. In the last year many places have installed a wi-fi system, sometimes charging for it, other times not. One business owner asked me my thoughts on charging for wi-fi. I told him the primary attraction of wi-fi for users , is the ability to use their own machine. Secondary consideration is speed, third, location / cost. If you ask a guy with a laptop to choose between a free place, that is slow, or a place that charges, but has a fast connection, he’ll end up at the second place. Maybe not straight away, but eventually. I have been using Joulla’s on Jl. Dhyana Pura in Seminyak. Joulla’s is a German restaurant, that also does Indo food.

Ubud internet access sucks

Ubud internet access sucks, that’s my verdict. On this trip I have tried to work at the extremely expensive (90,000rp for 1.5 hours + hot chocolate) Highway, and the other local internet cafes (spend 20 minutes trying to get into my mail).

Slow connection in Seminyak Bali

The internet connectivity here in Seminyak really sucks. I might as well be sitting her peeling potatoes, waiting for my mail to open. Its 10.15pm on a tuesday night, I’m at the place across from Santa Fe on Jl. Dhyana Pura, big screens, nice machines, but the place is about 100f in temperature and the speed is like a dying man’s last hour.

Bali keeps getting better

Bali is improving in many ways and today I had another little victory. Not only are my wife and son still alive, but I managed to get online using wi-fi access!!!! As many of my friends will agree, I am bad news for electronic goods. I don’t mean to hurt them, but when I have a piece of high tech gear for a while, it stops working.

Getting my stuff together in Bali

Great to be back in Bali. Awesome! I feel more than ever that this is the place in the world I want to live. I feel lucky to have a lovely wife, son, friends and great business partners that make this all possible. My challenge is to be a nicer person, and not get caught up in all the small daily annoyances. Its the big picture stuff that counts, and for me its all A+.

High in the small mountain village of Pancasari some 50 kilometers north of Denpasar the stocky fingers of a young Balinese farmer are dancing on a computer keyboard typing the contents of a website according to an interesting article in the JP.
