Sri Kusama Hotels and Bungalows on Jalan Legian in the midst of Kuta Beach offers affordable mid range accommodation. Safe, quiet, convenient with friendly manager and staff who are willing to work towards your needs.
As you pass through from the parking area / lobby to the bar / swimming pool you will notice there hotel is laid out with 2 types of rooms, 2-storey type over looking the pool and garden cottage type. The garden has a more tranquil atmosphere with the 2-storey room having more of a party atmosphere during busy times.
Sri Kusama sits on Jalan Legian behind a Dunkin Donuts and across from Dome coffee shop close to Poppies II. To access the party spots of Seminyak will cost 15,000rp in a taxi and Kuta Square is a 10 minute stroll.
There aren’t too many extras here but the family atmosphere makes up for it.
I talked to Miss Ribka at the front desk about her experiences during the bombing and she gave me an interview.
Made Wijaya said he and his staff were very willing to work with a guests particular needs.
Obviously having Dunkin Donuts as a front on the street makes for an unusual appearance, the hotel entrance is actually to the side and is traditional and attractive.
A choice of 2-storey rooms or garden cottages right there on Jalan Legian is a nice option for travelers.
The mellow atmosphere and staff willingness to interact make this a good option.
Jalan Legian isn’t for everyone and if you need a quieter place right outside your hotel you might choose a place in Seminyak.

Manager: Made Wijaya
The operations manager of Sri Kusama hotels is Made Wijaya from Kuta. He told me that the hotel was opened in 1974 and is family owned. It was one of the leader hotels in the Kuta area, originally Poppies II was just a dirt road leading to the beach 5 minutes away with palm leaves all over the place.
Made asked me to call him Wijaya to differentiate him from all the other Made’s on staff, a problem I’ve come across myself.
He told me the Sri Kusama became popular with Aussie tourists particularly because of its location close to 5 bars, 2 discos and 1 nightclub ( before the bombing).
He also said the hotel’s best qualities are the family style service and staff- guest friendship.
The Sri Kusama is a quiet hotel now, but previously it was crowded with young people. These days it’s a good option for families.
One big difference between the staff at a large resort and the staff here is that here the staff have time to talk to the guests. A lot of the staff come form high school and have perfected their English by talking to the guests. Some guests even have students who are employees.
The hotel has a number of regular guests from Japan, Australia, Denmark and Holland, including some who work for the UN in E. Timor.
About 60% of guests stay for more than 3 weeks and Wijaya told me he has a guest coming this month for 6 weeks.
Wijaya said that many guests enjoy the late night bar here located next to the pool. Many people like to come back after dinner, have a drink take a swim then hit the bar again. The staff here are super flexible.
Wijaya described the hotel as the anticlimax of Jalan Legian’, meaning that it was in the section of Jalan Legian where all the nightclubs and bars are but isn’t a bar itself. The hotel sits behind a Dunkin Donuts and opposite from Dome coffee shop and Wijaya likes to say Dome is opposite us instead of vice versa.
We tell the guests feel at home paradise’. You want something just tell the staff say Wijaya. Service is different here, there’s no restaurant because there are so many restaurants nearby. We serve American and Continental breakfast and some Indonesian food all day till 11pm.
The staff here take Hindu and Christian holidays as there are muslim employees. Wijaya tells his staff I’m the boss okay, but apart from that we’re all the same.’
It’s a simple hotel that is handy and comfortable. If you want a fridge in your room you can ask the staff and they’ll rent you one!
