Seraya Shores – A special place in East Bali

Bali has some hidden places that are special and one of our favourite places is Seraya Shores, a small hotel out in East Bali, on the coast close to Ujung.

For me staying at Seraya is one of the best ways to capture a feeling of being in Bali. The swaying palms, crashing surf and very relaxed atmosphere make me want to recommend this place to everyone.

Seraya Shores has 3 bungalows with a total of 5 rooms. Owner Amanda also has her own bungalow on the property.

When Amanda originally bought the land 5 years ago she built one small bale on the site to start with and spent time there herself to learn about the environment and the natural elements that affected the site. These included where the sun rose and set, where the winds blew from and which direction any new structures should face to make the most of all these factors.

The property is developing and in the last 2 months a temple in the center of the property has been added, as well as a cliff top bale ideal for dining or relaxing plus a hilltop wall and bale around a sacred rock which the village priest said must not be moved.

During the day staff sometime play the flute or bamboo gamelan instrument in traditional style. Next to the gamelan bale is a dining table and chairs for group dining.

Handmade stone pathways line the property leading from the parking area, down past the kitchen and connecting each of the bungalows with the 2 large bales over looking the ocean.

One of the most powerful aspects of Seraya Shores is the proximity of the ocean. The daytime views are gorgeous and waking up to the sound of the waves crashing at your door is incredible.

Another aspect is the overflowing plants and trees that cover the property. With 30 ft palm trees swaying gently in the breeze its not hard to relax and actually feel you are in a totally different part of the world.

Manager Jamie has a 4 wheel-drive Jeep and the staff are happy to arrange a short trip around the area as well as to Pantai Putih, the gorgeous white sand beach at a secret location.

Snorkeling trips on a boat can be arranged too and this includes feeding schools of fish with bread that is provided. The water is so clean that it is an experience to remember.

One aspect of staying at Seraya Shores that is all important is the remoteness. Traditional Bali is right here without the commercial trappings of Kuta. Seraya Shores provides a comfortable place to stay to enjoy this part of Bali.

For those wanting to take a day or afternoon trip from Seraya Shores there are several options. The drive around the coast to Amed offers views of sweeping bays and traditional fishing villages. The life out here is very simple and local people will often stop and greet you as you drive past. A circuit round the coast should also include a stop at the water palace at Tirtaganga.

Scuba diving can be a great experience and there is the famous wreck of USS Liberty just up the coast in Tulamben.

All the bungalows and rooms at Seraya Shores were designed and developed individually and have the own style. All beds come complete with clean white sheets, blanket and mosquito nets although the ocean breeze ensures mosquitoes are not something you will have to worry about. Each bathroom has a towel rack with large white towel and elegant sarong.
