Manager: Ida Bagus Puspa Arthawa
From: Bali
Has worked at the hotel for many years.

Baliblog: In all what is the total area of the hotel?
Arthawa: The total area is 75 hectares.

Baliblog: How many rooms do you have?
Arthawa: We have 74 rooms inclusive of 4 Deluxe and 68 Standard rooms with 2 swimming pools and 1 restaurant open 24 hours and then 1 swim up bar.

Baliblog: What is the length of the beach front you have?
Arthawa: It is very short really, the width is nothing more than 25 meters.

Baliblog: What year was the hotel built?
Arthawa: It was built in 1991. It was built twice, one year 50% and then another year 50%.

Baliblog: How would you describe the style of the hotel?
Arthawa: That is a little bit hard to explain because it’s what Indonesians call ‘gado gado’. You’ve got a kind of Balinese style and modern architecture also.

Baliblog: Most of the rooms come in 2 storey blocks?
Arthawa: Yes most of them are 2 storey except for the Deluxe because only a single floor room like cottage.

Baliblog: I see you have tiled roofs.
Arthawa: Tiled roofs mostly. We’ve got also Dutch roof. We’ve got 3 buildings with Dutch roofs.

Baliblog: For a guest who has never been to Bali what is special about the location of the Puri Raja?
Arthawa: The location, that really depends upon the interests of the person. One who wants to get away from the high concentration of Kuta might find the Puri Raja is really a good place because even when the hotel is full its looks as if it is fairly quiet. The area is a little quiet but is still close to the shopping activities.

Baliblog: How long does it take from the airport?
Arthawa: It takes about 20 minutes.

Baliblog: Do you provide any special activities like dances?
Arthawa: Not any more because it is closely related to the food and beverage production. You can see there is a lot of competition outside the hotel with many restaurants close by. The other reason is that 40% of our guests are repeaters who have already seen the Balinese cultural dance and are not interested in seeing it again.

Baliblog: I overheard a guest down by the pool telling a member of staff that he recommends the Puri Raja to friends back in Australia.
Arthawa: Well I am interested in what he said because we really don’t have the money to promote the hotel, the guests promote it for us. We like to say the hotel is selling itself in that market by which we mean Australia and New Zealand.

Baliblog: Is Australia your biggest market? The reason I’m asking is that I’m trying to figure out the most prevalent demographic for this hotel.
Arthawa: Well nationality, we call it ‘Australian’ even some of them are British and New Zealanders because they settled in Australia already. That group is up to 85%.

Baliblog: If I was going to recommend this hotel to different groups would I be recommending it to young people, married people, families, honeymooners. Which is the best group or groups?
Arthawa: It again depends on the interests of the people, but from the structure we see it is not really for the families. The numbers of inter-connecting rooms are very little and we don’t have a special ‘family room’. If we have to say for the young people, yes we can accommodate them but usually we get older people, married people. The younger people could prefer to stay in Kuta where the activities are.

Baliblog: What makes this hotel special in your opinion?
Arthawa: I think the location is a big advantage because we have good access to the beach. One think we find from people who are return guests is that they have made personal close friends with the staff. I think in a small hotel we have to be like this.

Hotel Puri Raja -
Legian
, Bali, Indonesia

Hotel Puri Raja is located on Jl. Padma Utara in Legian. The airport is 20 minutes away.

Situated on the beach the hotel is equidistant between the busy tourist streets of Jl. Melasti, Jl. Legian and Jl. Double Six.

Jl. Padma Utara feels like a quiet back street and the hotel driveway is medium sized with security on the gate.

The lobby area at the front of the hotel is quite impressive. While the hotel has been around for quite a few years the staff make a good effort at keeping things shiny and clean. The lobby has a marble floor with a large wooden roof. Decorations are in Balinese style including an elaborately carved and painted door.

The lobby and rear lobby sections are equipped with wicker chairs and couches. While I was at the hotel the lobby seemed quiet and tranquil.

All the staff wear traditional clothing and my guide Gusti who has worked at the hotel for 12 years was friendly.

The Puri Raja has 2 types of room, Standard and Deluxe which are set back from the lobby toward the beach. Directly behind the lobby is the first of the 2 swimming pools. This is rectangular shaped and is complete with lounge chairs.

To the left is a 3 storey block of Standard rooms, each complete with either a terrace or balcony. The balconies are adjoining and do not have furniture.

Directly behind the swimming pool is a Balinese archway leading to the 2 storey bock of rooms. The gardens are carefully attended and the 2 storey rooms are equipped with balcony and terrace furniture.

The second swimming pool situated close to the beach is free form shaped and has a pool-bar. The restaurant is right there too and overlooks the beach on the other side. To access the beach you simply walk 5 meters across an access road and there you are. This section of Legian beach is much quieter than Kuta beach or Blue Ocean beach.

Rooms are clean and well kept, no nasty surprises here. The hotel does have a relatively high occupancy rate being popular with Australian couples. The pool is decent and the beachside restaurant is a low key, relaxing place for a drink or dinner. To get to the beach simply walk through the restaurant and through the traffic-less access road and the beach is 10 meters away.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………

Location:
Hotel Puri Raja is located on the beach Jl. Padma Utara Etc. Twenty minute from the airport, 10 minutes from Kuta and within walking distance of Jl. Legian and Jl. Double Six.

Atmosphere:
Walking through the parking area to the lobby I could tell this was a smaller scale hotel that has been around for a while. The lobby was quite impressive with high wooden roof and staff dressed in traditional costume.

The Padma area is very popular with Australian tourists and this hotel seems to be one of the most popular. The hotel was fully booked when I was there.

I’d say the general atmosphere is one of a decent level hotel with Balinese style that provides a fun atmosphere for Australian family groups. While there I overheard one man tell a member of staff he recommends the hotel to friends back in Australia.

Luxury Level:
The Hotel Puri Raja only has 2 types of room, Standard and Deluxe. Both were decent with bathroom, bathtub, hot water, AC and a nice clean room. The rooms are simple and good with white wall and a small amount of decoration.

The swimming pools are equipped with lounge chairs and the beachside pool and a pool-bar which was doing brisk business when I visited.

What makes this hotel?
This hotel is unique because it offers a fun, family style hotel in Legian which is on the beach and close to the tourist attractions of the area.

Staff Friendliness:
My guide Gusti who has worked at the hotel for 12 years was very friendly and showed me the whole property.

Why would you stay here?
I would stay here if I wanted a budget hotel on the beach in Legian, that offered extras like AC, TV, swimming pools and restaurant. Great for families or groups on a budget.

Why would you stay somewhere else?
I would stay somewhere else if I was on a strict budget and preferred to do without the swimming pools, restaurant, AC, TV etc. and get a guest house.

If I didn’t want a family type hotel that sees a high occupancy level I might choose somewhere else.

What do the rooms feel like?
The rooms are simple and clean with plenty of white tile and comfortable beds. Each room has Air-Con, Refrigerator, Telephone, Satellite TV and hot water. It’s a comfortable place with some extras that a guest house won’t have but still affordable.

Noise levels:
Jl. Padma Utara isn’t a main street but is in the heart of the tourist scene in Legian. Sitting in the rear of the lobby I can hear traffic noise but further towards the beach that won’t be a problem.

Amenities:
The hotel has it’s own 24 hour restaurant located next to the beach which seems pleasant and low key and 2 swimming pools. For people with kids a baby sitter can be arranged as well as laundry, dry cleaning, massage and tours. Safety deposit box available at front desk.
