Coconut Grove Village –
Sanur
, Bali, Indonesia

Owner / manager: Made Putra
From : Bali

Baliblog: Made the hotel was built in 1975?
Made: Actually in 1976

Baliblog: The hotel is located on Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai in Sanur just before Jl. Danau Tamblingan.
Made: That’s right.

Baliblog: What is the area of the hotel?
Made: Actually it is 8,000 sq meters.

Baliblog: What is the total number of rooms here?
Made: We have 36 rooms. They are 19 Standard, 6 Superior Villa, 4 Superior rooms and 7 Deluxe Villa.

Baliblog: Can you tell me starting with the Standard room what is the difference between the rooms.
Made: The Standard room has hot & cold water, AC, TV. Superior rooms are the same as the Standard rooms but the space is bigger, they also have a refrigerator. The Superior Villa we have a family room and one bathroom, the Deluxe Villa has a kitchenette and garden shower.

Baliblog: If I was trying to describe the style of the hotel to someone who has never been to Bali?
Made: The style looks like a village. A traditional village in Bali. When you enter the Coconut Grove Village you feel something different about the building and the atmosphere. It really looks like a village.

Baliblog: So each one of the villas has a ?kori agung’ (stone capped archway) like the entrance to an inner courtyard of a temple. The villas are maybe the special part of the hotel? I really like the handmade rock wall, what is that style called?
Made: We call it ?karang’, its like limestone.

Baliblog: That looks very nice, with the carved door frame and the kul kul (traditional split log bell). You have one swimming pool and one restaurant. What kind of food do you serve?
Made: The restaurant is only open for breakfast and we serve American breakfast and Indonesian breakfast.

Baliblog: So in the evening its not open?
Made: In the evening the bar area is open for beverages.

Baliblog: What do you think is special about this hotel?
Made: If we have a guest we treat them like they are at home.

Baliblog: How many years have you been the manager?
Made: Two years.

Baliblog: What is your usual occupancy level? People want to know if the hotel feels busy or quiet.
Made: It feels quiet.

Baliblog: I think it feels quiet. Sometimes I go into a hotel like Bounty with an occupancy of 90-100% , always very busy. Some people like it, some people don’t like it.
Made: The months of July and August are busy here with the groups from Java. After that its quiet.

Baliblog: Where are your guests from?
Made: We are popular with Belgian visitors ,they come here 1 time in 1 year, usually February. We also have other European guests as well as from Japan Australia.

Baliblog: If I am going to recommend which type of person would like this hotel do I say young person, old person, married, family?
Made: Family, couple. Not old person because in the Deluxe Villas we have steep stairs that could be hard for them to climb.

Baliblog: But other rooms like the Standard are okay?
Made: Its okay.

Baliblog: How long does it take to get to the beach?
Made: 10 minutes walking to Sindhu Beach.

Baliblog: Where do you tell your guests to go for evening entertainment?
Made: Along Bypass Ngurah Rai are many places selling food in the evening.

Baliblog: For music and dancing?
Made: In Jl. Danau Tamblingan area (Sanur) there are many bars. Its only 10 ?20 minutes walking from here.

Coconut Grove Village –
Sanur
, Bali, Indonesia

hotel_front_coconut_village102304.jpg

The Coconut Grove Village in Sanur is located on Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai which is probably one the busiest roads in Bali.

The hotel is a few hundred meters from the beach and is on the left side if you are driving towards Sanur from Kuta. It is situated at the end of a 20 meter driveway.

The small reception area at the front sits next to the restaurant and bar.

It is obvious as soon as you enter that this is a Balinese style hotel with the natural bamboo / alang alang roofs a poolside ?bale’ structure and ?kori agung’ style stone archways accessing the villas.

The central pool is fairly small but pleasant and the gardens are well tended and contain many colorful flowers and bushes.

The atmosphere of the place is relaxing and is actually quite a surprise from the busy street outside.

The villas are cozy, comfortable and cool. The Standard and Superior rooms are clean and very simple and feel like a guest house with extras. I’d stay in a villa if I was staying here.

The staff seemed friendly especially the owner and his sister.

Location:
The Coconut Grove Village is located on Jl. Bypass Ngurah Rai is Sanur which is 30 minutes from the airport and 20 minutes from Kuta.

Atmosphere:
The atmosphere is of a small hotel designed in Balinese style. The place feels small and you don” know whether to expect a guest house or a hotel. The pool area is quiet and relaxing with a poolside ‘bale’ structure to relax under. A tropical feel comes from the many flowers and bushes and the stonework around the archways to the villas is very nice.

I’d say this place is very personal where you will be able to relax, meet the staff and enjoy some creature comforts.

Luxury level:
While the Coconut Grove Village isn’t a luxury place it does provide comforts like AC, refrigerator, swimming pool, restaurant and bar to make your stay pleasant.

Weird Stuff:
I think the location just off of the Bypass was a surprise for me. The atmosphere went from hectic to peaceful in the space of 20 meters.

Staff Friendliness:
The staff were friendly and offered to show me around. The owner Made, was around and we chatted under the bale with his sister. Very nice people.

What makes this hotel unique?
This hotel is unique because it is located in Sanur right on the Bypass and provides easy access to the airport, Kuta, Ubud and the beach. The hotel offers decent accommodation in Balinese style and being small is very personal.

Why would you stay here?
I would stay here if I wanted a small traditional, family operated place in Sanur that was affordable.

Why would you stay somewhere else?
I would stay somewhere else if I didn’t want to be next to the Bypass, right on the beach or needed to be closer to the tourist scene / night life in Kuta.

If I wanted more space I might not like this hotel as it is compact.

Noise levels:
The hotel is on the Bypass and there will be 24 hours background traffic noise. However while I was sitting next to the pool chatting with Made I wasn’t conscious of too much noise and must say some of the places on Poppies II feel noisier.

How do the rooms feel?
The villas feel comfortable, cute and fun with the loft and extra bed inside as well as couch and places to recline. The Superior rooms are clean and feel rather like a guest house.

Amenities:
Out Door Swimming Pool, Restaurant (Warung Amawanri), Spa from Wellness Spa, Free Shuttle Bus Service to Sindhu beach and Kuta, Satellite TV, Parking Area.
