Where to stay in Kuta Bali

The village of Kuta has changed dramatically since the first modern age travelers drifted in in the early 1970’s. Back then the small lanes running between the main street and the beach were just sandy tracks, complete with palm trees, cattle and crater-sized potholes.

Getting to Legian meant going to a completely different village. Nowadays the Kuta-Legian-Seminyak strip is one contiguous sprawl. The actual village of Kuta (now a very rich village) is bordered by Jl. Bakung Sari at the southern end, Jl. Melasti at the northern end, Jl. Pantai Kuta to the west and Jl. Tanjung Mekar to the …

Taking a wet ride to Ubud Bali

ubud areaFriend’s of mine from Oregon, recently visited me, here in Bali. During our time in Ubud, they elected to stay at the Pradha hotel, at the bottom of Jl. Kajeng, which is centrally located in downtown Ubud, next to the Royal Palace on Jl. Raya Ubud. Another friend is coming out on the 31st of this month, who also wants a few nights in the same hotel. Trouble was, the online rates were considerably higher than the 225,000rp we got. My friend asked me if I would go to Ubud, and try to get the same rates for her.

Straight shot to Candi Dasa in East Bali

pondok bambuMy friend Toby is out here in Bali from Oregon. I’m pretty much his tour guide (my bill comes later!) and with that in mind chose where we went. Having Ika & Jevon along, meant our range of options was somewhat limited. I don’t want to spend a ton on accommodation, Toby wants and AC room, with a pool if possible and the kids of course don’t care to visit cultural places. My strategy was, jump on the Kusamba Bypass and head straight to Candi Dasa. The 3 main things that everybody wants (a toilet, food and a place to sleep) can be found there in abundance.

Accommodation on the Bukit Bali

Bali has a wide variety of activities and items of interest, ranging from surfing, scuba diving, spas, temples, shopping, nightlife etc. Bali also has a whole selection of places with decent accommodation, whether the want the affordability of Kuta, the trendy locale of Seminyak, or the luxury of Nusa Dua, you’ve got options. One area that is beautiful, affordable, relaxing, close to Kuta, with great beaches, is the Bukit Peninsula. Unless you’re a surfer, the likelihood is you’ll only go to the Bukit for a fancy hotel, or a trip to Uluwatu temple. You should look again, because there are some great places to stay.

Accomodation in Selang Beach, East Bali

good karmaDriving Toby, Maya, Ika & Jevon around East Bali I had to weight up my options as far as accommodation. I like to go cheap when I can and I know Toby was concerned at keeping Maya comfortable, hoping for an AC room. Selang beach, on the Amed coast about 20 minutes south of Amed, offers some okay places. Good Karma Bungalows is a set of bamboo guest houses on the beach. Conditions are simple and include an outside cold water shower, bamboo / alang alang roof, bamboo furniture and a Robinson Crusoe feel. Up on the cliff, Blue Moon Villas, offer several rooms complete with AC, pool and all the extras. We checked out the prices for both. Blue Moon were asking $115 a night, Good Karma, 250,000rp. I got 200,000rp which was okay with me.

Taking a trip to Ubud Bali

This morning I was in my shower at 7.30am getting ready to shoot downtown for a trip to Ubud. As I finished showering, the handle of the faucet broke, meaning water was gushing out, nothing I could do about it. After a moments thought, I carried on getting ready, knowing the pembantu would be along later and maybe she could fix it.
