Adi Dharma Hotel
Legian, Bali, Indonesia
Reservations »
The Adhi Dharma is located on Jalan Legian in front of the Matahair Hari departemnt store and affords easy access to Kuta, Legian and Seminyak. The rear property is quieter for those who come to relax and has a larger pool. Rooms are simple but comfortable.
The Adi Dharma is in fact 2 separate properties located 200 meters apart. They share the same management and style and operate together. The atmosphere is of a mid range hotel in a downtown location that has a definite Balinese character. Both buildings have Balinese stone work at the entrance, temples on site, statues, plenty of plants and tress and the staff wear traditional costume. Both properties pack in quite a lot of rooms and for some people it might seems a tad cramped, even though the rooms themselves are of a high standard and are not cramped.
This hotel feels like a mid-range family place rather than an upscale resort and you can expect to see plenty of kids in the restaurant area and the swimming pool.
The Adi Dharma Cottage are located on Jalan Legian just up from Ryoshi’s Japanese restaurant. For people who like to shop the Matahari department store is right there as is a ton of local arts and crafts shops. The beach is about a 7 minute walk and Kuta is a few minutes.
The hotel is located on Jalan Benesari about 200 meters away from the other property. You basically go out the back of the Cottages and a short walk will bring you to a wide driveway with a traditional Balinese gateway. The hotel being set back from the main street is slightly closer to the beach and is in a quieter location.
Both properties are great for those who like a mid range, mid size hotel that is set back from street but close to action while retaining and traditional Balinese style.
The Adi Dharma Cottages and Hotel are both 3-star and feature a swimming pool and restaurant. The rooms without being luxurious are large, clean and very comfortable. The Deluxe room in the hotel features a 4 poster bed which would be a treat for a weary traveler.
My host Mr Wiras noted staff friendliness as one of the highpoints of the hotel. He said that not only are the staff encouraged to be out going and friendly, but to do it in a Balinese way that is natural and from the heart.
I found it a bit weird that a hotel has the choice of 3-storey rooms and cottages and in another location close by has another whole check in, lobby etc. with the whole deal all over again.
This hotel has 2 locations very close to each other which together provide great access to Legian, Kuta and the beach. For a visitor who wants a better room, pool and level of service than you’ll get at a losman ( guest house ) but without the excessive cost of a resort this would work pretty well. The Adhi Dharma really tries to project a Balinese atmosphere in appearance and staff personality and the fact that they encourage their staff to learn traditional music and dancing and invite guests to join in means it is more than just marketing.
I’d stay at the Adhi Dharma if I wanted the proximity to Legian / Kuta for shopping / nightlife as well as the beach. If a losman / guest house didn’t offer the kind of room and I wanted a restaurant and pool this hotel would work well. The Adhi Dharma hotel is perfect for families with kids too.
If I was going purely for budget I’d stay in a losman / guest house. If I was going to be out most of the day and exploring bars and restaurants at might too I wouldn’t need a hotels with a restaurant. If I needed a resort complete with spa and a higher level of luxury away from the hubbub this might not work either.

We stayed at Adi Dharma for 2 weeks in june 2002, and we would like very much to come back for at least 4 weeks, sometimes in 2004.
It was well worth the money and REALLY good service. Also nice food with well priced beer at the swimming pool every day at *happy hour*.
