Terrorism readiness kit: What’s in yours?

Anyone who is coming to Bali is probably aware that have been 2 major terrorist attacks in the last 4 years. Will there be any more? Who knows. According to GW Bush “The terrorists are weakened and fractured, yet they’re still lethal. We cannot let the fact that America hasn’t been attacked in 4 1/2 years since September 11th lull us into the illusion that the threats to our nation have disappeared. They have not.” Survival in the face of terrorism will depend on our following the motto of the Scouts: “Be Prepared.”

Okay I recently applied some WD40 to my Swiss Army knife, does that count? The US Homeland Security “Ready America” talks about putting together an emergency kit in case of terrorist attack. I think this is more about ‘keeping people scared’ than saving anybody, but it is a good idea to have some kind of emergency kit for natural disasters, power outages and unexpected events.

The Homeland Security says you need week’s worth of water and non-perishable food, protective masks, battery-powered radio, first aid kit, flashlight, clothing and bedding. They also suggest storing a tent, sleeping bags, fire extinguisher, can opener, rain gear, and a map. Here in Bali I was thinking what I’d put in my kit. Maybe a weeks supply of mosquito coils, baby diapers, baby porridge, 50 packs of noodles for Ika. A couple of dead chickens including the head and feet, a bag of garlic, large bottle of cooking oil, bowl of chilies, a case of Pocari Sweat, bottle of arak (if things got tough), 500 Duracell batteries so I could still take photos, large photo of Tiara Lestari.

There’s probably a lot of lonely men who have made it through the night with a bottle of arak and large photo of Tiara Lestari.

i’m not sure if your comments about “keeping people scared” are sarcasm or not – i don’t think preparedness is a joke. the u.s. (and my government as well, the canadian gov.) are pretty upfront about the need for personal preparedness as they have said (in more words): “if something goes wrong be prepared to go at least 72 hours without our help”.

considering most governments can’t hand out licenses in an orderly fashion what do you think 72 hours after an emergency would be like?

i say: prepare, don’t expect the government to bail you out. the fable of the industrious ant and the lazy rabbit was coined because it’s true – which are you?

and for the sake of your swiss army knife, stop putting wd-40 on it. wd-40 is not a lubricant, it’s a solvent and it’s “slippery” properties disappear quickly as it evaporates. if you spray wd-40 on moving parts and do not apply grease or oil afterwards it will probably seize up.
