Kerobokan jail which is located about 5 minutes drive from my house, held a Christmas bash for the accused drug trafficking ring known collectively as the Bali Nine. Convicted marijuana trafficker Schapelle Corby was also in attendence.

Reading an account from the Sydney Morning Herald, that it was indeed a unique little gathering. Friends and relative of the groups were allowed to join in, with parents bringing party hats and gifts. The ‘good sport award’ goes to Michelle Stephens, the mother of accused drug mule Martin Stephens. She brought each of the jail birds a gift, including Andrew Chan who is supposed to have threatened families with death.

My first Christmas away from home was in California. It was strange for sure, with warm weather, sunny skies, strange accents and a different set of people to share it with. Of course I had copious amounts of Louis Martini to help drown my sorrows.

I hope the younger members of the group in Kerobokan took some comfort from their Christmas party.
