Warung Asia: Thai food in Legian Bali

thai102205.jpgBali has a fantastic array of Indonesian food from all over the world as well as all over Indonesia. I love Indonesian food and eat it at least once a day. I do however get the urge for something else once in a while and today I checked out a place on Jl. Padma Utara, called Warung Asia. They are located just off of Jl. Double Six and serve Thai food. Giving credit where it's due, Linda Van Hoff from the Eco Lodge put me onto this place. If Linda says a place has good food you'd better listen! Warung Asia is a cute little place open on 2 sides with a cooling breeze. A simple bamboo roof structure contains 7 tables and has enough seating for 25+ people.

I ordered a watermelon juice and Thai ginger chicken dish. Indonesians are funny when it comes to food. Anything stinky, greasy and chewy they're into. Put cilantro, tumeric, curry paste, or ingredients they aren't used to in it, and they turn their nose up. My chicken dish contained peppers (capsicum), red chilies, ginger, cilantro (coriander) and brought back the taste of Thailand.

My ginger chicken was 20,000rp and was delicious. A funny thing happened while I was getting ready to leave. The young guy on the cash register twice made a mistake regarding the bill, once deliberately. It left a funny taste in my mouth but I am positive about the food. This place will be on my list of 'go to' warungs from now on.

Warung Asia is terrific. I spent a few afternoons enjoying a nice bowl of tom yum there after some pampering at the Jiwa Spa just behind it. The small shops and market stalls in that area have some really gorgeous stuff too.

Hi Nick,

I am a Balinese who has lived in Australia for sometimes. Food happened to be my passion and I just love trying out cuisines from every corner of the world. In regards to all the spices that you mentioned, I am afraid you have made a mistake there. Most indonesian food do have their fair share of tumeric, curry paste, coriander, and of course the tangy tamarind. However, there is a very significant similarities between Thai curry paste and Indonesian curry paste which include chilli and spices which are well recognised in Indonesia and of course coconut milk.

Alrighty then, I was just chipping my two cents there.

cheers,
Neuva
