The Bali Ayu Hotel in Kerobokan is located on Jl. Petitenget, the looping street that connects Jl. Oberoi to Jl. Raya Kerobokan. Getting there from the airport means a 30 minutes ride from the airport using the Sunset Rd Bypass. The hotel is 3 minutes drive from the beach and 2 minutes from good restaurants (Venue @ The Moon, The Living Room). Shopping will mean a 2-minute trip to Jl. Raya Kerobokan where you will find a great selection of furniture places. Head down Jl. Seminyak and there is a great selection of clothes shops and art shops.

The Bali Ayu seems a small place from the street and might be easy to miss. The property does extend back a fair way though. A driveway extends all the way down the left side of the property and the small parking area is behind the reception area at the front of the hotel. The reception area is compact and has a couch and chairs along with a fountain and pond with fish. A tour desk features a selection of brochures including What's Up Bali, Bali Hai Cruises and surfing lessons. A local wood carver I Made Sucita has a selection of his work on display for sale.

There are 32 rooms altogether in 3 classes, Standard, Standard Villa, Superior Villa. The Standard rooms extend back form the lobby is 2 storey blocks. The Superior Villas follow them as far as the pool and then you get Villas which are split, Superior on the bottom, Standard on top. When I visited most of the rooms were full and I got to see the Superior Villa, which has a kitchen. The villas have their own perimeter wall and small garden area. The entrance to the villas is a Balinese style kori agung stone gate, capped by a tiled roof. A bench seat on the terrace provides a pleasant place to sit and relax in private. The upstairs villa is accessed via stairs on the side of the villa meaning both sets of guests share one common entrance to the garden. The entrance to the room is decorated with traditional Balinese stonework, the door itself is carved. All buildings on the property feature cement bricks and tiled roofs. The decoration is Balinese in design.

Down the side of the long access walkway large pots are placed at intervals for use as bins. The staff has tried to make the gardens attractive and they are fairly pleasant considering the limited space.

Inside the Superior Villa the main bedroom is large, with a kitchen, lounge area and garden bathroom. The bedroom is spacious and bright, the lounge area a little dark. Each room has AC, IDD telephone, fridge, TV. Dècor in the bedroom is simple with a light colored tile floor, white walls and a single Balinese painting. The room is pleasant though because the large windows allow plentiful light. The dark wood furniture includes 2 bedside table lamps and stands, a small lounge table with 2 chairs, and a writing desk and chair. The garden bathroom includes and bathtub and shower and looks comfortable and bright.

The restaurant is located upstairs from the lobby and opens from 7am-11pm. The menu includes burgers, salads, pasta, main courses and Indonesian dishes. A hamburger is 24,000rp, Carbonara 27,500rp and an Aussie pizza 32,500rp.

The Lobby Bar is not open as yet.

Location:

Atmosphere:
The Bali feels like a small quiet hotel when you walk in. The block of standard rooms is the first thing you come to walking down the long straight driveway to the rear of the property.

The pool area is decent and very popular with Australian tourists. During my visit Paradise FM was playing the whole time and there was noise from the pool. If you need a greater degree of quiet ask for a room away from the pool. The staff is all Balinese and people were smiling and saying hello as it was getting off my motorbike.

What makes this hotel unique:
This hotel is unique because its location is not located in the center of the tourist spots of Kuta, Legian and Seminyak. This provides plenty of opportunity to explore and means you are not confronted by nick-nack shops, when you step out of the door. The Kerobokan Petitenget area is fast developing into a nice restaurant and lounge bar area, just take an evening stroll from Bali Ayu towards La Lucciola along the beach, or further on to Jl. Oberoi and you will find some cool places.

The rooms are spacious and decent, without being luxurious. For an affordable price you can get a decent place without all the 'budget tourist' stuff that you find in other areas.

Staff Friendliness:
The staff was friendly. A couple of ladies smiled and said hello as I was coming in, one of them telling me about her lunch. The receptionist showed me a room and the cleaners stopped to say hello. Assistant Manager Ketut Utama was extremely courteous and helpful.

Luxury level:
This is not a luxury place but what you get is a big clean room with AC, IDD telephone, fridge, bathtub, TV. The pool seems decent.

Weird stuff:
The 2-storey villas are actually rented separately, meaning the people upstairs from you might be strangers. The privacy aspect of having your own enclosed villa might not be as high as it could be, if the other people need to access their room via your front garden.

Why would you stay here:
I would stay here if I had a family or a small group of friends and wanted to stay out of the main tourist scene for an affordable price. This hotel gives you a location that is within a few minutes of the beach, close to good restaurants and a short taxi ride from the Seminyak party scene.

Why would you stay somewhere else:
I would stay somewhere else if I wanted to be in the middle of the tourist scene with shopping, bars, restaurants and ATM's outside my front door.

This hotel is family friendly with the pool area being a lively scene, with the music going. If I didn't want the family scene I might choose somewhere else.

Noise levels:
The 2 main sources of noise are the road and the pool, which features rock music during the day. The road is not a main road but a fairly busy secondary road and you can hear traffic noise from the pool.

How do the rooms feel:
The rooms feel clean, large, comfortable and decent although not luxurious.

Proximity to the action:
While the Bali Ayu is not in the middle of the tourist scene, it lingers on the edge. A short drive or walk will get you to the ever-expanding list of great restaurant along Jl. Petitenget and Jl. Oberoi. The Seminyak party street, Jl. Dhyana Pura is 5 minutes by taxi.
