Phone Cards: A cheap way to call home from Bali

cards062205.jpgVisitors to Bali might be interested in phone cards that can save you money over using a wartel (phone office). You can call locally, overseas and to cell phones. The cards come in all denominations including 22,000rp and 110,000rp, and work out better value than the wartel. All you need is the use of your hotel phone to connect with the toll free number. Phone cards are sold at post offices including the little place outside Okie House on Poppies II at the junction with Jl.Benesari. They are sometimes sold at Circle K but not always. Normal phone rates to Australia are 8,300rp per minute. Using the card you pay 1,250rp. For the UK the rate is 2,000rp and for the US 1,250rp. Everyone over uses cell phones, even people with no money. Picking up a used phone is easy if you go to a camera shop or simply ask a local. I got my phone 2 years ago for 350,000rp. When I visited Australia I replaced the SIM card and had practically had a new phone.

Expats rarely use anything other than a cell phone and for business and socializing in Bali's maze of entertainment places, a cell phone of the way to go.

G’Day Nick,

Mobiles are practically indispensable if you are in Indo for a long period of time.

I bought my new Nokia 2100 a year ago in Denpasar at the Nokia shop for Rp650,000. Charged it with a Rp100,000 sim card and could easily phone Australia thus saving money at Wartel’s.

Barrie,

It seems likes you have a new phone every 5 minutes when you come to Bali, I remember having several different numbers for you.

I’m a tech numb-skull and last night told Ika “Oh no my phone has finally quit, I can’t even get the charger inside it.” She looked at it and said “You have tissue paper stuck in the hole.”

G’day Nick,

He, he…!. Do yourself a favour and keep away from Araldite!.

Yeah, I do buy phones on a regular basis, but, it’s only my number that has changed. Except of course in April when my mobile somehow got drenched in a downpour and carked it. So it was off to the Nokia shop, bought a new mobile.

In the meantime Candika had dismantled the mobile, used a hairdryer to ‘dry’ the inner components and the bloody thing worked.

Guess who got the new mobile?

OK Baz…I’m curious. We all know what Nick does but being that you are such a regular here, what is it that you actually do for a living? You seem such a knowledgable and interesting character I’ve been wondering for a while. Sorry if I’m being nosy!

Hi Di,

No, you are not being nosey!. I create ‘things’ with words. Simple as that.
