Manager: I Made Runatha

The operations manager of the Legian Express in I Made Runatha from Tabanan, Bali. Made has been with the hotel for 3 years and told me he worked at the Ba;li Hai restaurant / spa before which has the same owner.

He told me the Legian Express has been open for 5 years and was operating under a different name for 4-5 years. The hotel has 24 room ( 16 standard and 8 cottages ).

I noticed the cottages have a traditional roof and Made said they used a traditional fibre called alang-alang from Ubud and special bamboo from Bangli which is known for its durable quality.

At the moment hotel occupancy ranges from 60% -100%. The guests range from Australians, who make up 60% of the total and stay an average of 10 days or more, Japanese, who make up 20% of the total and stay for 4-5 days and Europeans, who make up 5 % of the total and stay for an average of 7 days. The hotel also attracts visitors from other Asian countries including Taiwan and Korea.

The hotel was operating with less staff when I visited and Made was really on top of things. He was brutally honest and told me the hotel has 4 other locations including one in Denpasar which is shit, catering to domestic guests.

I asked Made about the selling points of the Legian Express and he said high on the list was the location right on Jalan Legian. Proximity to shopping on the main street as well as the Matahari department store and Legian Plaza are in handy reach.

Made told me that as well as having its own restaurant the 3 which he would recommend to guests in this area are Mama’s restaurant which is 10 meters away and serves German food, Katupat which serves Indonesian and Tapanyaki which serves Japanese food.

Walking to the beach will take approximately 10 minutes.

Made told me about the development of Kuta and mentioned how several years ago local crime started to become more noticeable until the banjar ( local religious organisers ) began taking more of a leading role in punishing offenders. Made said that now crime is not too much of a concern and guests are very safe.

Made told me that cleanliness and hygiene are very important at the Legian Express and the water used for cooking is bottled water.

Upon arrival guests are served with a welcome drink and have mineral water in their rooms.

Made said that because this is a small hotel the staff have a chance to talk to the guests and get to know them.

Number of Rooms: The Legian Express has 16 Standard Rooms and 8 Cottages. The rooms are spacious and the cottages feature traditional Balinese style roofs made from alanag-alang and bamboo and open air bathroom.

Guestroom Facilities
Each standard room has individually controlled air conditioning as well as shower and bathtub with hot and cold water.

The Cottages are well appointed and have showers with hot and cold water, TV with local channels, a telephone.

Dining & Entertaining
The Express Café serves delicious Indonesian and western cuisine in an open air side walk setting. Buffet style breakfasts can be arranged for larger groups inside.
